WAMI has begun to support a variety of youth efforts and will continue to expand our focus on the future of the sport.
-Since 2018 we have held a free youth drawing at the Wisconsin Musky Expo to put a musky reel (Daiwa Lexa WN 300, $199.99 msrp) into the hands of an angler under 12 years old.
-Since 2018 we have co-sponsored a youth tournament with Bill’s Musky Club. This tournament pairs 2-3 young anglers with an experienced musky fisherman who teaches them proper sucker fishing techniques, and in some cases casting as well. This has given 40 youths from the greater Wausau area a chance to compete for a traveling trophy displayed at their school plus an individual trophy. The winners are about as excited as any kid can get! To date, our club has contributed $600, about 30 baits, and cooked dinner for the participants.
-In 2020 we began contributing to Wausau School District’s Wilderness Connections program. This program was founded by Wausau School District counselor and WAMI secretary Andy Grimm in 2017. This program takes at-risk youth from 6-8th grade on a canoe camping/fishing trip on the Flambeau River in northern Wisconsin. For some it’s their first time fishing; for all it pairs them with positive adult role models who teach them healthy and constructive outdoor skills to improve their lives.
